Texture Science: Deep vs. Water vs. Jerry

Avoid inventory mix-ups. Deep Wave is distinct from its “messier” cousin (Water Wave) and its “tighter” cousin (Jerry Curl). Here is the technical breakdown.

Deep Wave Precision

Deep Wave

Defined, unidirectional spirals. Resembles a precision spring. The curls flow in one uniform direction for a polished look.

Direction: Unidirectional (↓↓↓)
Diameter: 0.8cm – 1.2cm
Style: Polished / Elegant
Water Wave Volume

Water Wave

Opposite directional curls. Strands curl towards and away from the face, creating a “wilder,” beachy texture with high volume.

Direction: Multi-directional (↓↑↓)
Diameter: Irregular Mix
Style: Beachy / Messy
Jerry Curl Coil

Jerry Curl

Tightest spiral pattern. Designed to mimic natural 3C/4A Afro-textured hair. High shrinkage and density.

Direction: Tight Spiral
Diameter: < 0.5cm
Style: Natural Blend

Pro Tip: Versatility Factor

Deep Wave is the most versatile of the three. It can be flat-ironed bone straight and will revert to its curl pattern after washing (if Bamboo Steamed). Water Wave and Jerry Curl are difficult to straighten effectively due to their complex coil structure.

The “Bamboo Steaming” Advantage

Why does some Deep Wave hair feel like straw? It was likely steamed on metal rods. We use traditional Bamboo Rods to maintain hydration during the 4-hour heat cycle.

Bamboo Rods (Our Standard)

Bamboo is porous and releases moisture when heated. This “steams” the hair from the inside out, keeping the cuticle soft and elastic.

Aluminum/Metal Rods

Metal conducts dry heat rapidly, often “frying” the hair. This results in stiff, brittle curls that tangle easily after the first wash.

QC Protocol
The “Corn Chip” Smell Test

Authentic steam-processed hair uses Corn Starch as a biodegradable heat protectant. The scent is the easiest way to identify quality without a microscope.

Smell: Faint Corn / Toast PASS (Steam Process)
Smell: Acid / Rotten Egg / Heavy Perfume FAIL (Chemical Bath)

“Wet Look” Chemistry: Solving the Frizz Factor

The #1 customer complaint with Deep Wave is “poofy hair.” The “Wet Look” is not just water—it requires a specific product regimen. Educate your customers to reduce returns.

The Science of Definition

Deep Wave hair has a high surface area. When water evaporates, the hydrogen bonds reset, causing the hair to expand (frizz) to seek moisture from the air. To maintain the “Wet Look,” you must trap the water inside the shaft before it dries.

1. Hydrate
2. Seal
3. Define

Formulation Guide (Private Label Ready)

Glycerin / Aloe Vera Humectants that draw moisture into the curl pattern. Essential for the “wet” appearance.
Argan Oil / Jojoba Oil Sealants that lock the hydration in. Must be applied AFTER the water/conditioner mix.
Sulfates / Heavy Alcohols Stripping agents that dry out the cuticle, causing instant frizz and tangling.

Zero-Shedding Maintenance Protocol

Because of its tight spiral structure, Deep Wave requires a specific care routine. We combine consumer education with reinforced manufacturing to solve the shedding issue.

The Golden Rule: Wet Detangling

1

Saturate with Water

Never comb dry Deep Wave hair. It must be dripping wet to activate elasticity.

2

Apply Conditioner

Use a generous amount of conditioner to create “slip” before touching it with a tool.

3

Bottom-Up Combing

Use a wide-tooth comb starting from the ends and slowly working up to the weft.

Warning: Dry brushing pulls the tight curls apart, causing frizz and snapping the hair strands (breakage), which customers mistake for shedding.
Manufacturing Spec

Triple-Head Weft Technology

Standard wefts use a double-stitch. For Deep Wave, we use a specialized Triple-Head Sewing Machine. This adds a third layer of reinforcement thread to lock the hair into the track, specifically designed to withstand the tension of daily detangling.

QC & Inspection Checklist

Deep Wave requires specific elasticity and texture checks. Use this protocol to audit samples and prevent matting complaints.

Deep Wave Audit Protocol

Copy these specs into your Supplier Inquiry.

  • The “Finger Coil” Elasticity Test Pull a curl strand straight. It must snap back immediately (no drag).
  • The “Wet Tangle” Check Submerge in water and scrunch. If it mats instantly, reject (Cuticles Misaligned).
  • The “Crunch” Test (Heat Damage) Squeeze ends. Crunchy sound = Burnt by metal rods.
  • Smell Verification Must be odorless or faint corn chip smell. No acid/chemical odor.
  • Triple-Head Weft Construction Verify 3 reinforcement stitches on track to prevent shedding.

Why the “Crunch” Test Matters

Deep Wave requires high heat to set the curl. Suppliers cutting corners use metal rods that get too hot, frying the hair ends. This “burnt” hair feels crunchy and will break off within 2 weeks. Bamboo-steamed hair should feel soft and silent when squeezed.

Matting Red Flag

If the hair mats immediately upon wetting (The Wet Tangle Test), it is likely Non-Remy Acid Washed hair disguised as Virgin. The acid strips the cuticle, and silicone was added to fake softness. Once washed, the silicone dissolves, leaving a tangled mess.

Deep Wave Technical FAQ

Answers to common questions about styling versatility, maintenance, and length selection.

Can Deep Wave hair be straightened?
Yes, it is 100% human hair. However, use caution. We recommend not exceeding 400°F (200°C). Frequent heat styling will permanently loosen the deep spiral pattern over time. Always use a heat protectant.
How should I advise clients to sleep with Deep Wave hair?
The “Pineapple Method” is standard. Gather the hair loosely at the very top of the head and secure with a silk scrunchie. Sleeping on a silk pillowcase or using a silk bonnet is non-negotiable to prevent friction-induced matting.
Why does Deep Wave look shorter than Straight hair?
This is due to Shrinkage. The tight spiral pattern consumes length. A Deep Wave bundle will appear 2-4 inches shorter than a Straight bundle of the same actual length. We advise customers to order 2 inches longer than their desired “visual” length.
Does Deep Wave shed more than other textures?
Curly textures naturally experience more tension during detangling, which can lead to breakage often mistaken for shedding. Our Triple-Head Weft technology reinforces the track to minimize shedding, but proper wet detangling techniques are essential.
How do I revive dry or frizzy Deep Wave curls?
Hydration is key. Saturate the hair with a water/conditioner mix. Detangle gently. Apply a light oil (like Argan) to seal the moisture, and let it air dry. Do not touch the hair while it is drying, as this causes frizz.
